If re-elected to Wagga Wagga City Council, I will keep fighting against hidden costs to ratepayers.
Last year, there was a significant decision that took place in the Wagga Wagga City Council regarding the Council implementing Net Zero policies. After a lengthy and rigorous debate, my rescission motion to withdraw support for the implementation of extra fees, charges or levies connected to the Net Zero 2050 Roadmap was successfully passed. This decision was not made lightly, and it reflects our commitment to ensuring that our community’s concerns are heard and addressed.
The push for a Net Zero 2050 Roadmap sparked considerable debate within our community. The roadmap, while well-intentioned, raised valid concerns about the potential for future taxes, fines, or charges on individuals and businesses who might struggle to comply. In a time when many of us are already feeling the pinch of rising costs, these fears were far from unfounded.
During the council meeting on July 18 2023, I introduced an amendment to endorse the roadmap with a crucial provision: it would not be used as a tool to levy fines or impose financial burdens on those who weren’t able to meet its goals. Unfortunately, this amendment was defeated in a split vote. But I wasn’t ready to let the matter rest there.
I lodged a rescission motion for the next council meeting, and I’m pleased to say that this time, I succeeded. Our council has now officially got clauses and wording that expressly prohibits the use of fees, levies, taxes or charges for the Net Zero 2050 Roadmap. This victory is a testament to the power of open debate and transparency in decision-making.
It’s important to note that this was never about rejecting environmental responsibility. On the contrary, I fully support initiatives that encourage voluntary action and provide education on how we can reduce our impact on the environment. However, these initiatives must not come at the cost of imposing financial penalties on a community that is already struggling.
Throughout this process, I’ve been heartened by the feedback and support from many of you. Your voices were instrumental in securing this outcome, and I want to thank everyone who took the time to engage with this issue.
Together, we have ensured that Wagga Wagga remains a place where community concerns are respected, and policies are crafted with the best interests of all residents in mind.
Looking forward, I remain committed to promoting positive, voluntary actions that can help us build a sustainable future without unnecessary financial burdens. Let’s continue to work together to improve our community for everyone.
Thank you for your support.
